Tri Marching band returns for second year at The Indiana State Fair Band Day
Straughn- The Tri High School Marching Band plans to come back stronger than ever for its second year of competition at the Indiana State Fair Band Day, which takes place in August.
Band Camp cook place this week. The theme of this year’s show is a phoenix and the performance is titled “From the Ashes.”
The idea is to present the phonenix as a whole, then when it collapses into ashes, it will rise again and be reborn. The theme was appropriate considering the fact that for many years, the school didn’t even have a marching band. The band was resurrected a couple of years ago and competed last year for the first time at the State Fair with other marching bands from all over Indiana.
Band director Leah Harris said she has more staff members helping the band this year.
There are 38 members in the band this year, including 11 new kids. Some of the members are as young as 7th graders. Since some of the kids are new to marching band, the challenge is teaching them the new music for the competition.
James Cornes, who plays the alto saxophone, is marching with the band for the first time this year. Cornes is also in concert band and said being part of marching band this year is a little more challenging since he has to be more active and memorize the notes.
“It’s really fun. It’s very difficult at first, but eventually you learn and you end up kinda going into it and learning a lot more,” Cornes said.
Harris reminded the band members to be confident in their pieces. Based on her advice, the students play better and smile more, despite the heat and humidity.
Sebastian Buchanan, a veteran percussionist, performed with the Hagerstown marching band in the past. Now he’s a percussionist for Tri’s marching band. He said that last year, Tri wasn’t as intense as it is now.
“We are all kinda like a family Buchana said. “we’re really close.”
The Tri Marching Band is scheduled to perform at 2:24 p.m. Saturday Aug. 4 at the Indiana State Fair Band Day in Indianapolis.
